Balloch then and now PDF Print E-mail

Balloch Village has changed relatively little over the past 100 years. All the buildings in the picture still stand. The Grocer on the corner is now a hair dresser and shop further up the road is the Post Office and Co-op Pharmacy.  The building on the right is now a pub 'The dog House'.  All the trees in the distance have long gone to be replaced with housing.  Picture circa 1900.

A complete History of the Vale of Leven is currently being undertaken on The Vale of Leven Website (http://www.valeofleven.org.uk)

Turkey Red PDF Print E-mail

What was the Vale of Leven famous for?

Turkey Red textiles comes to mind, but nowhere in the Vale of Leven can I see evidence of this once flourishing industry. Its over 50 years since the UTR shut up shop here in the Vale.  Its all gone, not even a Bandanna can be seen anywhere. Small collections of pattern books, tickets/labels and material are scattered all over the UK but nowhere displayed in the Valley where it all happened.  Pictures of the buildings can be seen at Dumbarton library but very few pictures of what went on in these buildings exist.

It really is time to find a place to house the heritage from this important time in our local history. Time to collect examples from around the world if necessary.

Picture shows page from sample book of Turkey Red colour.  Some variations but all Turkey Red.

To allow the wider public a chance to see these wonderful designs our Heritage group will seek access to photograph or obtain photographs  of pattern books held by museums, universities, private individuals.

Cultural Heritage exchange to Slovakia, September 2007

This report was produced by the secretary to give a flavour of the culural heritage exchange he was on to The Slovak Republic.  There are various links throughout the text to sites in Slovakia and elsewhere, which were active at time of writing report.  Site links turns red when cursor passed over them.  These sites already give excellent accounts of their subject matter, without me rewriting. The report is informal and not long winded as requested in the contract. It also appears on Archnetwork site.
